Westbury has historic green lanes: the Drove Way, through the Wellhead Valley, and Shallow Wagon Lane, from the Ham to Heywood. The Eastern Bypass freeway-style road scheme would have cut these lanes. Wiltshire Council's highway plans would have messed up the ancient tracks and spoilt the best landscape. The Drove Way would have been severed, left alongside the bypass with HGVs rumbling through the Valley. Shallow Wagon Lane and its fields would have had HGV traffic noise introduced. And hazardous crossings. For three rights-of-way, you (and riders) would have had to dodge the HGVs to cross the fast new road. You may have waited and waited at the proposed uncontrolled at-grade crossings and eventually given up. One of the finest walks in the country would have been trashed... |
