Westbury has historic green lanes: the Drove Way, through the Wellhead Valley, and Shallow Wagon Lane, from the Ham to Heywood. The Eastern Bypass scheme would cut them with new freeway-style roads. Wiltshire County Council's proposals would mess up the ancient tracks and spoil the best landscape beside. The Drove Way would be severed, left alongside the Eastern Bypass with HGVs rumbling through the Valley. Shallow Wagon Lane and its fields would also have HGV traffic noise introduced. And hazardous crossings. For three rights-of-way, you (and horse-riders) would have to dodge the HGVs to cross the fast new road. Probably, you would wait and wait at the proposed uncontrolled at-grade crossings and eventually give up. |
